The Collections
In the late 1980's Ralph Steadman was touring the whisky distilleries of Scotland for Oddbins Wine Merchants and encountered Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen. This lead to a printing partnership which lasts to this day. One of the series Ralph created with the skill and craftsmanship of the Peacock Visual Arts team at his side is the set of etchings of portraits of great authors and poets. Famed co-conspirator of Hunter S. Thompson, Steadman’s work shares several key personality traits: a troubled relationship with sanity, an anarchic sense of humour, and at its core an unquestionable integrity. Steadman’s wry illustrations are both entirely surreal and endearingly honest. Made during a long residency stay with Peacock Visual Arts in the late 1980s these etching form part of a large suite that recognise writers of influence to Ralph. Amongst them Burns, Burroughs, Proust and Woolf.
